Relieving Chronic Pain and Tension with Portland Acupuncture
Oku Health, LLC located at Hazelwood Healthcare offers a calm, restorative experience designed to help your body shift out of “fight or flight” and into healing. Very thin needles are placed at specific points to encourage circulation, ease muscles, and nudge the nervous system toward balance. Most people feel little to no discomfort—common sensations are warmth, heaviness, or a gentle “release,” followed by deep relaxation.
You stay in control the whole time; we explain what we’re doing and check in often. Sessions may also include options like cupping or gua sha when appropriate, and we’ll share simple home tips for comfort between visits. If you’re dealing with motor vehicle accident (MVA) or workers’ comp claims, we can help with documentation and coverage questions.
Whether you’re here for headaches, neck or back pain, stress, sleep support, or other health issues, we’ll tailor care to your goals, preferences, and schedule—so you feel safe, supported, and steadily better.

Acupuncture in Portland, OR, for Wellness
Stress, Sleep & Everyday Aches
Wellness acupuncture is about feeling at home in your body again. If long days at a desk, busy family schedules, or training sessions leave you tight, wired, or worn down, sessions are paced to help you reset. We start with a simple conversation about your goals—less pain, more ease, better sleep—then create a plan you can stick with.
Treatment is unhurried; many people describe it as “the most relaxed I’ve felt all week.” You’ll also leave with straightforward self-care tips (breathing, heat/cold, light movement) that make a real difference between visits.
Frequency depends on your goals and how you respond; we’ll outline a right-sized plan and adjust as you improve. No pressure, no mystery, just clear communication and steady support for everyday comfort and long-term well-being.
Acupuncture for Accidents & Injuries
After a car accident or work injury, it’s common to feel sore, tense, and overwhelmed. Acupuncture can be a gentle way to reduce pain, ease muscles, and support sleep while your body recovers. Your first visit includes learning your history and developing a clear plan, what we’ll work on, how often, and how we’ll track progress.
We also help with the practical side. Our team can document your injuries, answer coverage questions, and coordinate with PIP (personal injury protection) or workers’ comp benefits so paperwork doesn’t slow your recovery. We pace treatment to your tolerance—starting softly and building as you’re ready—and share simple home strategies to limit flare-ups.
Your milestones might include less frequent headaches, smoother neck rotation, fewer nighttime wake-ups, or returning to work and daily routines with more confidence. The goal: a calm, steady path back to feeling like yourself.
FAQs About Acupuncture in Portland, OR
Does acupuncture hurt? What will I feel?
Typically, acupuncture is little or free of pain. It largely depends on the practitioner’s techniques and the receiver’s level of sensitivity. Sometimes pain is intentionally induced by the practitioner to reset the nervous system. The needles are usually inserted into the connective tissues between muscle, tendons and bones. These are the locations where Qi (vital life force of our body) gathers and distributes. It is common and safe to experience durable aching, tingling, itchy, warm, cooling, swelling sensations after the needles are inserted. This means the needles are actively regulating the Qi of your body. These are desirable sensations and are completely safe and harmless. Please get the practitioner’s attention immediately if you experience overpowering sharp, lightening, prickly, burning sensations with the insertion. At better location may be needed in this case.
Dr. Paau is well trained to know how to avoid puncturing any of the vital organs, arteries, veins, and nerves of the body. For legal purposes, a client must be informed of the risk of pneumothorax (collapse of the lungs due to puncture of the plural membrane) with acupuncture. Even though this is not a concern at Oku Acupuncture & Herbs, please feel free to inquire Dr. Paau if you have any concerns about such risks. Bleedings and bruises are common effects of auricular or scalp acupuncture. It is safe and harmless and most likely a beneficial effect (expelling toxic heat). In addition, you can always opt for non-invasive needling modality. If you have further concerns, please reach out to us at any time.
How many sessions do I need?
We recommend booking 1 visit per week for 4 to 6 consecutive weeks to receive better results. Some people like to book 3 or 4 visits, while some others find it easier to book 6+ visits at once.
I’m nervous about needles. Can I still try acupuncture?
Absolutely. We can start with fewer points, keep everything extra gentle, and stop anytime. You’re in control, and we’ll move at your pace.
Do you combine acupuncture with chiropractic or massage?
Yes. Coordinating care often leads to steadier results. Acupuncture can calm pain and stress, while chiropractic and massage address mobility and soft tissue.
Do you accept insurance, PIP, or workers’ comp for acupuncture?
Yes, I accept the following insurance plans:
- Kaiser/Heraya
- Blue Cross Blue Sheild/Anthem
- Moda
- Providence
- First Choice Health Network
- Pacific Source
- PIP
- Worker’s Compensation w/ Referral
